Day Time Spring Cooking

Hello, sweets!! It’s December again, the most wonderful time of the year for everyone, but for A and I… it’s the most exhausting time of the year! I am starting to feel the sappy aura of Christmas here again and the huge difference between December here and in Manila. December here does not feel like December.Everyone wishes for a white Christmas, but with Christmas comes COLD. Cold weather for everyone and the cold lonely feeling for those who are away from their families…like me.

At home, I always look forward to my birthday because I know after that everyone will make it a point that we will be complete for dinner every night for the month of December. December is the ultimate family month for us, but now…. as much as I want to, I would rather cross out dinner on my daily routine. The first week of December was pretty nice because A’s parents were here, I wish they could stay longer. My motivation for the coming days is Christmas Eve and Christmas Day! I can’t wait to go to New Jersey and spend time with the family!

DSC_0323A

I am starting to miss A…and how we could have lunch together at least 3 times a week. Lately, I am lucky if I get to see him in the morning.

So tonight, I want to remember all the sweet apartment lunch dates that we had during spring.

When life was still warm and lovely.

Back when I had extra time to go through our cookbooks and try at least one recipe every week. I, of course did something from the Milk Bar cookbook. Continue reading “Day Time Spring Cooking”

24: Birthday Brunch

11.29.2014: Hello, I am 24!

Hello dolls!!!! 🙂 As promised, here’s an entry about my 24th birthday. Life got extra exciting after I turned 24. How I wish I could have more hours in a day so I can finish everything that I have to do. The OCD in me is telling me that I should just keep on going…no stopping! But my fun-loving self is telling me to give my body a little break cause it is starting to get exhausted. Aaah how I wish time could freeze…even for just a day.

So I started the first page of the new chapter of my life with so much life. I think it is safe to say that we get rewarded equally by the amount of responsibilities that we face. That’s why I keep on reminding myself that I should embrace everything that comes my way, not complain. 353 days until I turn 25 but there are days wherein I feel like quarter life crisis is knocking on my door early. Haha Oh well, I have 353 days to make each day of my 24th year on earth memorable 😉

DSC_0223A

The eve of my birthday I can honestly say that I was not 101% excited about my birthday. I knew both A and I had to work all night so my excitement level was only 100….annnd I am away from my family so it was hard to be ALLLLL the way happy.

But waking up to a beautiful morning made me realize how God can bless us with the happiness that we deserve in different ways.

I know how blessed I am because of A and our family here. I was greeted by A as soon as I woke up and a table filled with presents and one of my favorite things to receive on special occasions…balloons!

It must be a challenge for A to pull off his surprise because I can be pretty nosy when it comes to my birthday and our anniversary (include Christmas as well! haha). I am very blessed to have a man who would wake up early to surprise me.

DSC_0191A

Since we only had the morning to celebrate, we decided to go out for brunch.

Not a lot of restaurants close to where we live serve brunch on Saturday so I asked A to choose where to go.

I have to commend him for always knowing where to take me. This is one of the best restaurants I’ve been!!! And I’m sorry if I have to keep it a secret for a little while 🙂 Continue reading “24: Birthday Brunch”

The Milton Inn

Hello, dolls! Hello, December!!! <3 Aaah, can you believe it?? It’s the last month of the year!!! So I had a very lovely birthday weekend, thanks to A and our families for giving me a memorable 24th birthday! 🙂 This weekend has reminded me of how blessed I am and how beautiful life is. It’s no different from how I feel everyday, but this weekend was major! I can’t stop thanking Him for everything, because I know I wouldn’t get to this point in my life without Him.

Anyway, so I still have a gazillion things to post before my awesome birthday weekend. So I will work on my throwbacks and squeeze in my birthday posts once in  a while ( I mean you know the drill, right? haha). Since I am still gushing about my birthday dinner with A, I thought of working on an entry that is quite similar to that — date night with A!

I am very fortunate that I have a man who would take me out on special dates even though we are not celebrating anything in particular.

We are celebrating life as we like to put it.

The Milton Inn is a well known restaurant here in Baltimore. It is a 274 year old fieldstone building, so imagine my face when A and I walked in. It was gorgeous and everything reminded us of BCC. From the food to the service and the decors. Continue reading “The Milton Inn”

Hello, Summer!

07.01.14: Color me SUMMER

Hello, sweets! Yaaay! I’m finally blogging about summer this year. Soon enough I will post about our adventures in Asia 🙂 Only 5 days left until I turn 24, seriously I can’t keep up with time anymore!!! I feel like we just welcomed November a couple of days ago and now it’s almost over! So yesterday was a lot of fun! We celebrated our little buddy’s first birthday so I’ve decided to post this entry now, a day in summer where we all gathered in the apartment again to cook great food!

DSC_0109A

Since it was a Monday, A took me out on a lunch date.We wanted to try something new so we went to this quaint Cuban restaurant in Towson.

Baltimore: Lunch Dates

Hello, sweets!!! Happy Monday!!!! I know most of you will not agree about the “happy Monday” part but for some people like A and I….our Saturday is Monday. Yesterday, I was able to have an amazing Sunday with A. He doesn’t get Sundays off unless he requests for it so we made sure that our Sunday together will not be wasted. The highlight of our date was our food adventures in DC…and once again, I can’t wait to share them with you soon!!! 🙂 —- I wrote this part yesterday morning hoping that I will be able to post this entry by the end of the day but something awesome happened so here I am finishing this one. haha

Since A and I would only get 2 dinners together each week, we see to it that our lunch dates will be good and eventful. We don’t always go to nice sit-down restaurants with a white tablecloth, most of the time we like to try those hole in the wall restaurants that would often surprise us with something delicious.

IMG_5884A

One of my favorite places to go to here in Baltimore is Cross Street Market. We’ve tried pretty much everything that they have in there and none of them disappointed us.

Steve’s lunch is one of A’s favorite because of their delicious subs.

IMG_5887A

We both love Bruce Lee’s because of the chicken wings (which unfortunately was already closed when we got there), and Matsuri’s for his tepanyaki noodles! We always get the seafood (NOMS!)

IMG_5880A

I love Kwon’s because of the fresh produce!! I love how the vendor lets me taste the fruits because he knows I am crazy about them haha 🙂

———–

IMG_7963A

I would always get a cup of berry yogurt when we go to Costco! Sooooo gooooood <3

DSC_0281A

We were so happy when we discovered Towson’s Best over the summer. One of the best Chinese restaurants we’ve been to here in Baltimore and it’s close to us!

Their beef chao mien takes me back to Asia..it’s so good!!!

DSC_0277

I love how most Asian restaurants that offer sushi have “sushi lunch specials”. The fatty in me is so happy because I get to have 2 rolls for only less than $9!!!

DSC_0278

Everytime a restaurant offers avocado shake I get it. This is not my favorite because they add lime to it!

Free ice cream after our meal!! TB spoils us haha

DSC_0293A

I like it when A takes me to the places he would often go to before he met me.

Chaps is known for their crazy delicious sandwiches. Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives even featured them on the show! So I was pretty excited when we went for lunch with A’s parents 🙂

Jimmy John’s opened a location close to our apartment, I agreed to going there for lunch because they can make any sub as a lettuce wrap!

I enjoyed my tuna sandwich so much, except the “I have mayo on my face” and “my hands smell like tuna and red onion now”.

————

We like going to the Amish Market whenever we can. I always get hyped up when I am in there because of all the choices in food, and cool stuff that we can take home!

07.08.14: Our New Playmate

Hello, sweets!!! 🙂 How was your weekend? Ours is just about to end tomorrow and it has been amazing… just how I expected it to be. I am still not over about my Friday night out with my favorite people here in Baltimore, and last night God blessed us with another memory to cherish for the entire week — double date night with our best friends at one of the best restaurants I’ve been!

I wish I could share to you our wonderful dinner last night now but I have waaaay too many posts that I need to publish before that so I will talk about something relevant to it instead. I am grateful that we have friends here in Baltimore that we get to hangout with during our days off. Friends that can relate to us in terms of the things that we love to eat or cook. It’s hard to find a true friend in a city that I’ve only been for less than 3 years, but Frances and Roger (and now baby Roger too) has contributed into making my life here very exciting. I love weeks where in we get to see each other more than once, A and I have the most challenging schedules ever but thank God to our best friends who are willing to hangout with us on a weekday 😉

IMG_7051A

If not doing something in the kitchen together, we go out to eat and fill ourselves up with great food.

This was taken when we met up with Peter for drinks. I just thought this is a good first photo for my entry haha

One of the things that we value as Chefs is connection.  I am happy to say that at the age of 23, I’ve met a good number of talented Chefs that know me by name. It is a big thing because I know that when I get out there and try to doe something bigger for my career, I have people who could help or teach me how to get there. WK: The Girl and Charmery

06.13.14: The Girl

Hello, dolls!!! 🙂 Happy (almost) weekend! It’s very seldom that I look forward to Fridays here because I am usually at work until late which makes it feel like a Monday. But tomorrrrrow, I get to embrace it just like this one! A night off with my fiance, and I am too hyped about it because we are going to the Greek Festival then celebrate being youth with our dear friends. So here’s the part two of our friday date night. We made sure that we will have pictures of everything that we did and saw during that day, weekend date nights does not happen very often for us so we wanted it be well documented 😉

DSC_0807A

I wanted my previous post to be solely for Woodberry Kitchen (http://riannagalvez.com/2014/11/05/woodberry-kitchen/)

so I’ve decided to create another entry for my #OOTD and…..

DSC_0788A

our Charmery experience.

As painful as this may sound, I’ve stopped eating ice cream a couple of days ago. I was the biggest ice cream freak until I gained so much weight that I had to give up some of my favorite indulgences. I remember downing 2 cups of Nestle’s Rocky Road in one sitting, and how I loved Cornetto! Aaaaah just thinking about it makes me want to go to work now and get a pint of honey graham ice cream!!!!

06.13.2014:  Of Date Nights

Hello, sweets!!! 🙂 How’s your November so far? Can you believe we only have 2 months left until we say hello to 2015?? AAAAH! It has been an amazing busy year and I can’t wait to see what 2015 brings (crazy cause I already know it will be the best year ever!).The past week was lovely AND exhausting at the same time. A and I were able to go on our little adventures around the city, which I am very thankful for cause I do not know how I’d survive this week at work without losing my sanity if it weren’t for the beautiful 2 days that we’ve had.

A would sometimes take me out on romantic dates “to celebrate life”. Dates wherein we are not celebrating anything in particular. but life. A to me is the best date ever! He patiently waits for me to get done — I would often tell him that it would only take me an hour to get ready, the biggest lie of all! He never complained about how long it takes me to do my hair and make up, and how I try one million dresses before I find the perfect one. I love how he gives me this sweet look when I get out of the bedroom all dressed up instead of that “what took you so long slash we are late look”. He lets me order 10 dishes — no not really haha but as Chefs we can both get a little crazy when it comes to food. There would be times that I would like to try 2 appetizers and A would let me even though it means giving up his pork for my salad. He is A — he looks into my eyes and holds my hand. He never fails to make me feel like the most beautiful girl in the room (even though I always tell him, I AM NOT!).

DSC_0871A

It’s very very very rare that we both get the Friday night off, and as much as we both want to relax and prepare for work the next day, A would take advantage of our night off and make our Friday memorable.

One of our favorite restaurants here in Baltimore is Woodberry Kitchen.

We love everything about this restaurant! The rustic vibe, food, location…everything!

Spring Lunch Dates

Hello, sweets! 🙂 Hello, Autumn!!! It may not be as warm outside as spring or summer but I am happy that I can still go out and not wear layers and layers of clothing. The past 3 days has been lovely, the weather and the time that I had with A before another crazy work weekend were just some of the things that I will hold onto until our next day off. Days like this remind me of spring,, the beautiful flowers around our place, the green grass, and the joy of having sun out until 8pm. A and I does not let a week go by without trying something new — food, place, experience, anything!

Yesterday, I woke up saying “thank God it’s Monday”. A day where we only worry about where and what to eat. I cans say that we tried a lot of new things this year, different cuisines, went to places we thought we will never try,and discovered hidden gems around the area. So here are a couple of Mondays during spring, beautiful spring.

DSC_0686A

I am a FroYo addict and A knew about that even before he took me out for our  first “date”.

I won’t go into much cheesy details but for quite sometime he thought I ate FroYo for breakfast ,lunch, and dinner! Haha

DSC_0687A

I love how our apartment is so close to a lot of froyo places. I WILL NEVER GET HUNGRY! haha

TCBY is such a sweet discovery. The velvety texture of their froyo and unique flavors are the qualities that I look for when I go to a froyo place.  Continue reading “Spring Lunch Dates”

05.05.14: HOLA

Hello, dolls!! Hello, OCTOBER! Wow,where did September go??? Everytime I blog I get reminded of how time is moving so fast, or am I just getting older so I feel that way?I know I have never been so good about updating this blog, and I say it all the time that it almost feels like I am being scolded by my Chinese teacher back in high school for reading an English book in class (okay, I am probably not making any sense now). No more one year old entries, unless it’s a major TBT that I’ve been holding onto. Since it’s the beginning of October, and we only have 92 days until we say hello to a new year, I want to work on as many entries that I can and read about this year with a big smile on my face.

DSC_0128A

I love Mexican food, and I keep on thinking when I started loving it. Growing up in Manila, we did not have a lot of Mexican restaurants until late 2000, but  nachos and tacos are favorite snacks in the Philippines, no remarkable places that serve burritos or chmichangas. I used to go to Taco Bell when I was a kid and when I lived in Cebu for a couple of months, going to this Mexican place 15 minutes away from my apartment was the best treat that I can give myself every week.

DSC_0118

I always get excited about Cinco De Mayo, I embrace the celebration like I’m a Mexican! The thought of having Mexcian food all day is heaven to me. Lucky for me, A gave me a good Cinco De Mayo by letting me eat Mexican food all day! 😉

04.27.14: A Sunday Well Spent

Hello, dolls!! 🙂 Hello Baltimore! I am back!!! I am back to reality…. which came too soon for A and I cause in less than 24 hours we both went back to work and endured a day in the kitchen, on our feet! Anyway, the cold season has started to make its way back and I am not too excited about it. It seems like it was only last month when I finally enjoyed the weather here. I do not like winter, and the only good thing that makes me feel good about it is that fact that I can play with layers of clothing…other than that, NO THANKS!

DSC_0017A

Fall is fast approaching and I don’t think I am ready for it yet. I just brought back summer clothes enough to get me through the entire season from my trip in Bangkok and I can’t probably use them until April! BIG YIKES! I was so used to the climate in Manila that I forgot that here, I have to deal with 4 different seasons.

Thinking about fall almost brings me back to April, when we went to Emporiyum.

It was a pretty cold day, but not cold enough to make me wear 3 layers of clothes, but warm enough to make me take off my jacket once in a while.

Spring Time Dinners

Hello, dolls! Hello, Manila!! 🙂 A is finally here in MNL and we are both here again, with my family, having the time of our lives. I find Manila extra amazing when A is here, I’ve lived here for 23 years and I’ve never appreciated my home country like this until A came in the picture. I now think that  every place that we go to or see has something exceptional in it, who would have thought I would discover something new here after 23 years?

It has kept me wondering though, will we ever say “we miss Baltimore” while we are here? At least for A, I wonder.

DSC_0338A

So here’s a post that took place in Baltimore, our second home.

Home 2.0

Hello, dolls!!:) I can’t believe that I am back in MNL!! Aaaah it still feels surreal that I am in my pink room now blogging!! 🙂 The past 2 days has been lovely and I am so grateful for warmth welcome that I received from everyone especially my family. It is so nice to wake up in the morning and have breakfast with my parents again, have my sister as a roommate, and just be in the presence of my family — it almost feels like I never left.

It’s a blessing to have 2 places that I can call home. Last year, I thought I couldn’t let go of the idea of not calling Manila my only home, I felt like if I do so I will spend my life fighting time just to be with my family or it will make my chances of going home slim — and yes, I do not take family matters lightly. But with the help of A, his family, and our friends, I realized that I do not have to let go of MNL just so I can call Baltimore my home too. Some people, like me, are just fortunate to be blessed with an amazing life at the other side of the world, miles and miles away from home..

I know I have not posted enough “B-more updates” since February. Not enough cause there is a handful of amazing things that happened since I returned to my second home. So here is one, some of the things that helped/helps me love Baltimore everyday.

Frances x Roger

Hello, dolls!!! 🙂 One of the things that I really love about the American culture is how they celebrate life and love in so many ways. Growing up, I’ve always been jealous of kids abroad who can go “trick or treating” during Halloween, ; teenagers who can experience being asked to prom in a cute-cheesy way; and women who can celebrate their bachelorette party with all things fun and crazy. I can see a lot of people back home who started embracing these fun celebrations, so I am really happy cause it won’t be too bizarre if I try and bring a couple of traditions from here when I celebrate our big day next year.

I have not been to a lot of weddings, and all of the weddings that I’ve been to I was a part of the entourage…which is weird cause at that time I felt really young! haha. I’ve been a flower girl, a junior bridesmaid, and a secondary sponsor. So just imagine how excited I was when Frances asked me to be one of her bridesmaids. I was very happy because I am going to be a part of something beautiful.

Frances’ Bachelorette Party

03.27.2014: G.I.R.L.S

Hello dolls!! 🙂 Happy Friday! The past week has been pretty stressful, the (hashtag) BTB problems has finally kicked in. How did I go from more than a year to less than 11 months? Anyway, today I will be sharing with you another party that I hosted, this time in our apartment. I’ve learned to love hosting parties after my Dad’s great decision of building a rooftop for us. Though I have not hosted any gatherings for the past month because of work, I am looking forward to the next one that will come my way (and I am sensing that it will be in Manila! yay). So just imagine my delight when one of my good friends, Frances, came up to me and asked if I can host her Bachelorette party? I was so excited that I was able to finalize the menu in less than 24 hours haha. I only had less than 3 weeks to get the party together and I am glad that it was a success.

We had so much fun that uhh…I am sharing 50+ photos!! Yupppp.. I got a little crazy haha

DSC_0665A

So once again, I tried to be Martha Stewart and made most of the decorations and  all of the food

the other bridesmaids and I decided on the theme “welcome spring” (cause we were all just yearning for it) and I was supposed to do the party at our backyard but UHHHH it rained! It was pouring so I had to bring the party inside.

Housewarming Party

03.23.2014: Welcome to our apartment!

Hello dolls!! 🙂 How have you been? Another busy weekend has come to an end (and when I say weekend, I mean Sunday-Tuesday). It’s been a while since my last update about my life here in Baltimore. Can you believe that tomorrow, it will be my 3rd month here?? Time flies so fast, and this entry is 2 months late! HA HA

One of the things that I am loving here is…our apartment!! It’s spacious, modern, and just simply amazing. This is not an apartment tour but it could be the start of more apartment posts in the future, maybe some DIYs or housekeeping tips from a newbie like me! 😛

IMG_5610

Independent living is not new to me, but if I could rate my first year of being independent, I would say that I was like a student learning the ins and outs of having to deal with chores on a day to day basis. Coming from a home wherein I would only have to worry about waking up and doing the things that I love to do without worrying about house chores made me appreciate the beauty of being a responsible adult.

Anyway, let me share with you our amazing experience during our housewarming week.

IMG_5555A

Here’s how we spent our “last” monthsary. A and I decided that we will stop celebrating our monthsary after our second since we now know that we have years and years ahead of us! 🙂

03.27.14:  Greek Week

Hello, dolls!! 🙂 It’s almost Mother’s Day in the Philippines and I am so heartbroken that I am going to miss another one, to date I think I’ve already spent 4 Mother’s Day away from my Mom. Each weekend has been crazy busy and very exciting! I never thought I would look forward to Mondays this MUCH. I celebrated my first 7 Mondays here with a cocktail in one hand, laughing when I hear the #selfie song and hoping that I won’t scream #yolo by the end of the night. Now, reality came my way and now I am enjoying my weekends doing what I love to do — #kitchenlife.

P.S. I get a little too crazy with hashtags — #AsYouCanSee x #DontEvenGetMeStarted

For this year’s Greek Week, A and I were not able to go to more than one Greek restaurant because of his schedule. I was looking forward to going to at least one with him but #kitchenlife comes first in times like this. Luckily, I was able to go to Yasou with Lovely a few days before this so it was a good Greek week for me still 🙂

I am so happy that we were finally able to go to Oyster Bay Grille! I remember being too excited about that night because of 2 reasons — first, their Greek Week menu, and second, I get to see one of the best mentors I’ve had!

Taco Love Grill

Hello dolls!! 🙂 It’s almost cinco de mayo, one of my favorite cultural celebrations here in America. For the most part, I love it because of Mexican food and uhh who doesn’t love colorful and festive days like cinco de mayo? (I can also squeeze in tequilla here but I am not a tequilla drinker soooo yeah). I am extra excited about cinco de mayo this year because it’s on a Monday!!!! A and I are not going to be crazy drunk like the other amigos/amigas here in Baltimore BUT we are planning to have DELICIOUS Mexican food all day (and maybe a margarita for me in between).

DSC_0457A

I love Mexican food and I fell in love with Chipotle 2 years ago when A brought me there for one of our “secret lunch dates” before work.

I don’t think we’ve been to a lot of Mexican restaurants here in Baltimore because of Chipotle. It’s our to-go slash Mexican fix place!

DSC_0473A

So yeah this year we are going to get out there and try more Mexican restaurants and I know we will find some good ones like Taco Love Grill because we have a good number of Hispanics here in Maryland! 🙂

I was very excited to go to Taco Love Grill, it was my reward after getting things done at the MVA.

03.15-17.14: Third week highlights

Hello, dolls!!! I am baaaack ,not that I was away for too long or something. But yeah, I am just too happy that I get to update my site tonight after a very awesome work weekend. In 9 days, I will be here for 2 months (what?already?) and I am going to talk about my third week just now (yikes). Just like what I always say, “I’ve been incredibly busy” . In the midst of my crazy-busy-happy life I am still able to do a bit of traveling, EATING and shopping — what else can I ask for?.  I can say that as of now, I’ve got everything that I need. It’s still pretty hard to say this, but I am starting to realize that things are not always pink and pretty and how I want them to be.
