Best Sunday of the Year

09.14.14: Only beautiful memories

Psalm 30:5  “For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”. When I was a kid I used to think that once I am in my 20s I would be strong enough to handle losing a loved one. I was so scared to experience loss that I even said “just let me be 20 first before it happens”. Who was I kidding? I don’t think anyone can be strong enough to lose someone. It’s the worst kind of pain. For the past few days, I’ve mustered up the “art of drifting away”. I drift away from the sad side of my situation now and shift to the brighter side of life —- I move on every time pain pulls me back. It’s hard…. It’s hard to be away from my family during this time. All I can think about is how I wish I stayed longer, or I was ever a good granddaughter, did I ever tell him he is one of the reasons why I love to cook?

This is the most recent that I can get…as of now.

Our last Sunday back in MNL —- the best Sunday of the year.

We took Lolo and my family to M Cafe for Sunday brunch. I do not want this to be a doleful entry, and I want to remember Lolo with only happy memories and what better way to do it but to talk about food.

Room Tour: MNL

Hello, dolls!! 🙂 We are here in New Jersey now and I can’t believe that we are going home tonight….already!!! We spent 3 days here and it was ahmahhhzing!A short day trip to Philadelphia yesterday and a lot of eating since Sunday…aaah I am so happy <3 Anyway, I am not going to let this week pass without thanking my first love, my Dad. I’ve already caught up with my family posts (I never thought this day would come haha jk) so I am sharing something extra personal today.

I will show you a glimpse of the amazing room that my Dad built for my sister and I <3

Last year, I came home with soooooo much excitement. Aside from happiness that I felt when I saw my family at the airport, the anticipation of going back to a more beautiful home made me want to leave the airport right away.

02.23.14: Missing them everyday

Hello dolls!! 🙂 Today, A and I are officially welcoming our “Memorial Weekend”. Most of the people here started their long weekend just like normal people. But for those who are in the hospitality business like us, holiday/long weekends are nothing but a dream. So I am very excited for the next 2 weeks…and the next 2 months…and the days after that! LIFE EXCITES ME!

For the next 2 weeks, I am going to be busy juggling work, life and amazing stuff for next year. In less than 3 months, I WILL BE HOME!!! Aaaah. I can’t believe that I haven’t cried in a long tiiiiime  (thanks to my awesome job for keeping my thoughts away from loneliness) like I know there is a huge part missing in my life right now cause I am 10 million miles away from my family, but knowing that soon I will be home being the crazy daughter-sister in the pink room again makes everyday bearable (and of course having A in my life is a huge factor as well!)

Hours before my departure to Baltimore, my family and I went to Dusit Thani for lunch.

I will be giving you 3 Fs today — food, fashion, and family.

Of Befores

Hello, dolls!! 🙂 I can’t believe that April is almost coming to an end!!! It has been an amazing month and I am looking forward to the amazing things that we have planned for May 2014. Though I hate to see the loveliest month of the year leave, I am excited that in 4 months I will be with my family again!!! We have planned so much for my return and aaaaaah I can’t wait to travel and be with my favorite piggies again!!

So this the continuation  (sort of) of my major throwback post 3 days ago.

Maxi skirts/dresses makes me feel pretty without being too girly.

I hate”d” wearing pants. I used to wear them a lot when I was younger but everyone thought I was a tomboy or something so I had to do some MAJOR makeover and yeaaap a few years after here I am now, posting a fashion entry on my blog.

Anghelica’s

Hello dolls and hello APRIL!!! It’s official, A and I are only days away from celebrating our second anniversary. The weather is getting nicer now and I am just hoping that our anniversary weekend will be as good as last year’s. Anyway, one of the things that I am missing terribly is authentic Filipino food. It’s so weird cause I am not really the kind of Filipino who requests for Pinoy food every week, when I was still home I would often suggest Japanese,Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean, European or Italian food when we go out. BUT one thing that I could not resist are Filipino Desserts! I cannot go a week without having my kakanin or ube fix. And I must say, I go gaga over ube.

IMG_0918

Best ube dessert I had!!!

Uhhhh why can’t I just have this now??? Whyyyy!!?!?

IMG_0919

The person behind this amazing ube leche flan cake is probably the nicest and coolest Chef that I know. And I am not only saying this cause she understands my kaartehan BUT because she really is amazing like that.

Two of the best Filipino desserts in one?? YES PLEASE!

I wish I have a better photo of this heavenly delight when I ordered the first time, but my family just massacred this thing  after I opened the box. It was toooo good!!!

IMG_3883A

I am such a fan. I can’t sit and  just look at her posts on Facebook when she launched her “Dulce Queso Mamon and Smore’s”.

It’s such a shame cause Chef Ann just came up with another dessert and I am like 1 million miles away from the Philippines!! 😐 I swear when I get back I am going to order the biggest ube leche flan cake and the new baby!! 🙂

Our affair with Banana Leaf

Hello dolls!! 🙂 Today marks my first month here in Baltimore, and I can’t believe that it has already been a month!!! It definitely feels longer than that cause I have been productive everyday (or at least I try lol) I couldn’t think of anything better to write about than the beautiful memories that I have with my family before I left. As you all know I suck at keeping up with my time when it comes to updating this blog,  cause mainly I like to appreciate every moment, take all the feelings, and find the right time before I post them here (cause I am just this sentimental). So anyway, my first month here has been nothing but AHHMAHHZING! I wouldn’t have it any other way, the love that my family here shows me and the people I am surrounded with that makes each day bearable are just some of the few reasons why I can still update this blog.

It is happening NOW.

IMG_4700AIMG_4698A

Though we are miles and miles away from each other, my family is still my source of strength and the greatest motivation I have in being better and stronger. I can’t wait to be with them again and show how much I’ve grown since I left!!!

Is it September yet?

Random heaps with the fambam

Hello, dolls!! 🙂 It feels so weird to be home on a Friday night. Usually by this time, my family and I are on our way to Quiapo church for our Friday tradition. It feels different, to be here in my apartment waiting for 10pm to come. But,I know it will feel a lot more different when I have to spend my Friday nights in the kitchen again in a few weeks. So this is me… missing home.

Being away is never going to be easy but I guess it’s just a matter of getting used to and embracing the beauty of my new life. Everyday I wake up and think how blessed I am to be here and how I should be strong and not let my emotions get in the way. So this is me…giving myself a pep talk  HAHA

DSCN0561

One of the things that I ultimately miss about home is having dinner with my family.

I like Korean food! I remember going to a couple of good Korean restaurants with my friends. Back then my family was still adamant about it. I am so glad that they finally gave it a try and LOVED IT!

Thank you, Sariwon!

12.11.13: Of Wednesdates

Hello, dolls! 🙂 Today feels like my first official Wednesday here in Baltimore. It seemed like last week was nothing but a dream, I spent most of my days trying to beat jet lag and this crazy winter weather. So I finally gave in and updated my location on Facebook… I am now embracing the fact that I now live in Baltimore. It’s silly you know? A lot of people asked me before I left if I ever saw myself living in the US, I would always reply with a no and explain that when I was in high school I hated the thought of leaving home or one of my siblings living abroad. But now, now look at me…fate brought me here and it wasn’t all that scary after all.

Today is Wednesday and it feels weird that I am just here in my apartment waiting for this day to be over, and how I spent my afternoon without Alyza — laughing over great food and talking about life with the presence of our #COTD (cocktail of the day — yup I am coining it now! haha). It feels different you know? To not look forward to dinners anymore cause my family’s not around..and how I do not have to workout early so I can whip up something in the kitchen for my family.

DSCN0194A

I can’t think of a single person that I know that doesn’t like Japanese food. I love how it’s so simple but very satisfying..you know? Uhhh I can just go for some awesome sushi right now!

I am so glad Alyza suggested to try Katsu cause I really loved everything that was on our table 🙂

Of Wisdom and Courage

Hello. dolls!! 🙂 I am bacccck! Back here in Baltimore and back blogging 🙂 It has been an amazing but very exhausting past week. I am still trying to adjust to the weather and time here, and it’s not easy. February 2013 was not THIS cold, and I just came from a tropical country, so yeah this crazy cold weather is really giving me a hard time. And on another note, I am still jet lagged (yikes) I got here on Monday the 24th and I thought I could fight it but it’s hard cause the weather makes me want to hug my bed all daaaaay. So yeah, my schedule is pretty messed up cause I sleep at 6:30 PM and wake up between 1:30-2:45 AM. To make my situation more exciting, I haven’t unpacked my suitcases yet. I left almost 5 balikbayan boxes of stuff last year and I still have 1 box to attend to…then I can start on the stuff that I brought from MNL!

It seems pretty crazy…but I am loving it! (Except the weather of course). I love being busy, and I know March will be just as crazy. I have a lot of things to pay attention to – things to learn – submit important documents – and make all my career plans happen! I could be really really overwhelmed now, crying and depressed…but I am not (and hopefully I won’t be..ever). The support and love that I get from my family in the Philippines, my family here, friends and A makes it really easy for me to get through each day here. And of course, the strength that God blesses me with 24/7 is what keeps me going.

IMG_3494

I really want to post something recent but my usb cable is somewhere in my luggage and I am too cold (or lazy) to scramble through my stuff.

Since it’s a Friday, there is not better way than to reminisce about my family’s Friday ritual —- eat dinner together (Chinese food preferably) and go to Quiapo Church after 🙂

Soul Sisters

Hello dolls!! 🙂 I woke up today feeling more excited. I can’t believe how close I am to the “soon” that I’ve been saying for the past 5 months. I know this HUGE decision in my life will bring me nothing but fulfillment. This road is meant for me, I know it. I’ve been blessed since day 1, and I promise that I will live each day being grateful.

Time is moving too fast and I know I feel that way cause I have been extremely busy over the past few days..like crazy busy. My phone has been ringing like it’s my birthday and I am still trying to figure out how I will be able to hangout with everyone that I love without sacrificing time for my family.

friends

#JustSaying

You see, I like reading stuff – articles, books or anything that entices me. “buzzfeed”,”thoughtcatalog”, and the like has been all over our news feeds on Facebook and I try not to “re-post” everything that I see, but when I do,I try to share my thoughts/feelings about it.

DSCN0078

Every week, Alyza and I would set a day for our “afternoon date”. I like going out after I eat lunch with my parents and be home before dinner. Having lunch/dinner with my family is really important to me, it’s what I look forward to each day…and each week I look forward to my “afternoon date” with my favorite food buddy here in MNL. 01.18.2014: Meaningful Saturdays

Hello, dolls!!! 🙂 I can’t believe it’s already Sunday (insert 1 million exclamation points here). Time is moving waaaay too fast. For the past week I’ve been really busy making each day special for my family and the people that I love. You see, nowadays,  I find more gratification in making my family’s day extra special than to do the things that I love…or used to love.

Before, I would spend my weekends hanging/dining our with friends, not that I do not like doing this anymore…but it’s just that, I feel like Saturday nights are more fun when you spend it with the people who truly make you happy.I am so over the jejecrowd here, if I want to have some drinks and go “clubbing” I can just wait for another week (or 2 since I will be in MD on a Monday) and be my crazy self there and not sacrifice time for my family.

10.13.13: Sunday’s Best

Hello dolls!!! 🙂 I only have 10 minutes to finish this blog (good luck to me) so this is not going to be long. Today is Friday, and it’s a thing for our family to go to Quiapo church after dinner. I just made something delish that the piggies enjoyed and I want to be more productive so I am going to post this entry before we leave!! Haha

#Throwback: Since my departure is getting closer and closer by the minute, I can’t help but be excited of all the awesome adventures that A and I are going to have. Our first year together has been nothing but ah-mah-zing and we plan to keep it that way 🙂 Here are a couple of trips that really made my 2012/2013 extra awesome! 🙂

We were supposed to go to Spiral, but they were full that night 😐 I knew I should’ve called days before!

I tried my best to take photos of each station, but A and I were too busy devising our “buffet plan”. It really helps to have a food buddy cause I get to taste everything that I want and share the calories with someone! :))

10.12.2013: His Princess

Hello dolls!! 🙂 February just started and I can already feel that it will bring me nothing but happiness everyday. This entry couldn’t be more timely cause I just hosted an afternoon tea party for my favorite girls yesterday. I really want talk about how lovely and successful the tea party was, but I need to be diligent to this blog, and the wonderful photos I have on my desktop waiting to be shared,so I will just share this one first.

BUUUUT before I do so, let me give you a little #throwback again.Don’t worry guys, this will be over before you even know it. My love for throwback will come to an end soon….hopefully.

Anyway, since I am going to talk about a delightful dining experience,  let me share with you some of my favorite casual food adventures here in Manila.

Every girl wants to be treated like a Princess. Lucky for me, I have the 2 most amazing men in my life who never fails to make me feel like one, everyday. A has been nothing but a gentleman to me since the first time we met. I know it sounds really cheesy but he really is, you know?A tall, handsome, and amazing gentleman!

I never thought that one day, I would look and feel like a princess on a date. Don’t judge me but, ever since A came into my life, all I can think about the previous dates that I’ve had are…crappy. Especially to the ex who brought me to a food court almost every Saturday. Like c’mon dude, my Dad feeds me delicious food everyday! I would rather be home.

Forever21plus2: R is for Happiness

11.29.13: Hello, Happiness!

“That’s why every year I make sure that we get to celebrate their birthdays”.  It was one of the best stories that I’ve heard and those words has been on my mind since then.It crushed my heart in some way, and made me realize how blessed I am to have a Dad who gave us more than what a child could ask for. Cliche, but there’s no other way to put it. I’ve always had amazing birthdays, and I can only think of one that I really didn’t like — but it was all me (and my drama).  Amusement park birthday, weekend getaway birthday, debut, bowling party, night out “cause I am 19!” and karaoke party — these are just some of the birthday celebrations that I had before I turned 20. As time went by I realized I want my birthday to be more intimate, and not about me partying with friends (and people I do not really like), it’s about me celebrating with the people I love the most — my family. I know it is pretty difficult to celebrate my birthday with them because of my status, BUT I found a way to make up for it — make theirs more memorable instead or any event when I am home.

commitment

Anyway, I have been really busy lately. My soul is so inspired and motivated for the past few days. I’ve committed to “ore “kitchen loving” until THE day. I cook or bake at home often, but there are days where in I let my lazy bone take over me. So yeaaaap, I am going to make this happen cause I love seeing my parents’ happy faces every time I serve them something good <3

Before I move forward, let me share with you a little “#Throwback” thingy again. I am going to “commit” to this as well and finish what I’ve started. Since I talked about being inspired, here are a couple of entries that I posted relating to it 🙂

We went to Relish for my birthday dinner.

It wasn’t my first choice, in fact it was not in my choices at all. I originally wanted to go to Cafe 1771, but since my brother does not get dismissed at school until 7PM, we had to go somewhere nearby so I thought “oh, Mario’s would be a good option”. But just my luck, they were closed for the day! 🙁 My Dad has been insisting to go to a buffet since November 1st, I’ve graciously turned him down every time, cause I want to enjoy a nicely plated meal for my birthday. So yeah, it was 8:45PM  and I know that restaurants will be closed soon so we ended up going to Relish since we were already in the area.

10.08.13: Tea-b-Tea

Hello, dolls! 🙂 It’s #tbt time, the time when the universe makes it acceptable for me to post entries that are 3 months overdue. This week, I feel like I have time on my hands. Though, I must admit, it is not how I want it to be. My face is still swollen and I am saving Manila from seeing another jeje-face so I am locking myself up in this room until my face gets visibly better. (#MaarteGirlProblems).

I am milk “tea” lover, I love it so much that during my first 13 months in the US, I would die every time A would get me a milk tea (or should I say 2 large taro milk teas!). I never appreciated drinking hot tea alone, until we had afternoon tea with his Mom. For the past years, I would always try to add sugar, honey, or milk on mine. Up to the point that it loses its original flavor already (yikes). So yeah, that afternoon made me fall in love with tea all over again.

12.24.13: The rock and roll Christmas

Hello, dolls!!!! 🙂 We are only a few hours away from kissing 2013 a sweet goodbye! 🙂 So before I get too caught up with my agenda for tonight (Holiday Kitchen Lovin 2.1 y’all) let me do one last entry for the last day of the year! 🙂 It has been an amazing 2013, and I think I have expressed it a lot on this blog (and if not enough, here I am again for the last time this year). 2012 was the beginning of the beauty of 2013, 2014 will be just as amazing and even more cause God has never failed to surprise me with bigger and greater things each time.

I find myself wondering sometimes what I did to deserve all these — my beautiful family, my love Argerios, my family in the US, my passion for cooking and travelling, friends and everyone/everything around me that reminds me of His love for all of us. I am beyond blessed and I have another 365 days to love, inspire and give meaning to.

To you all who visits my blog and puts a smile on my face, Happy New Year!!! Let’s all keep inspiring one another <3

Cellar x En Route

09.27.2013: Way too chill for a Thursday night out

Hello dolls!! It’s Christmas Eve tomorrow and I am so excited!!!! 🙂 I have been very very VERY busy these past few days. I don’t know how I got into this beautiful situation but I am loving the feeling!! It feels like December 2012 all over again! 13 hours in the kitchen, grinding like there is no tomorrow! So I’ve been starting my day earlier than usual.. doing kitchen duties for the family and awesome people who believes in my talent (soooo happy that I get to spend my entire day doing what I love). As much as I want to blab about my Christmas high, I NEED to keep this short cause I promised my chopping board that I will only be away for a couple of minutes.

So before I get too caught up with my Christmas lovin’ here at home, let me share with you a part 2 of A’s third day here in MNL 🙂

Went out with the interns for dinner

So happy we got to see these babies again!!! 🙂

Since proximity is a big factor when hanging out with people who lives outside Manila, we had to compromise on a place where it will be easy for everyone to go to. So Ortigas was on top of the list.

Another thing that we considered was the crowd, most of the girls wanted a chill spot…where we can have cocktails and not worry about smokers that much. So we’ve decided to give Cellar a try. A resto bar/lounge owned by a high school classmate 🙂

Food and drinks were good..unfortunately… Thursday in Metrowalk is a dead scene. I don’t know if it was just a coincidence cause it was also raining that day.

09.26.2013: Gelato = Reward

Hello dolls! 🙂 So it has been more than a week since I last update my page 🙁 I have been extremely busy…and I will be AGAIN starting tomorrow. My Mom and I just finished our Christmas Eve menu and I am excited! I am so excited to make my family happy with the food that I will be making for the Holidays! 🙂 In between my crazy kitchen sesh (orders here and there and family dinners) another blessing came my way after I heard mass with my family (for those who do not know, there is a tradition here in the Philippines called Simbang Gabi). The fastest answered prayer happened last night! We were so stressed out for the past few days and we have been praying hard for things to turn around, and it did!!! I don’t know how I can express it even more on this blog, but LIFE GETS TRULY AMAZING WHEN YOU BELIEVE IN HIM! The word “amazing” is an understatement even, with all the blessings that he has given me, I don’t think I can ever thank Him for…eternity! Last night is an epitome of miracle 🙂

Anyway, so I am totally backlogged with all the heaps that I want to post here (#uhh). This blog just turned another year older yesterday (yay!).I pondered about random stuff earlier (you know during my wee hours) and I can still say the same since I started this “riannagalvez.wordpress.com” thingy…I am not a blogger, and will never be. 🙂

Riannas Seafood Ramen

I don’t know why we ended up in Kenji Tei, but it was in my “okay slash s0-so” category. I’ve had better ramen, and I know there are far more better ramen places here in Manila. But,since we met up with his long time friend (who also visited the Philippines) we had to compromise with the place that we were going to.

Location wise, I really want us to be in Greenbelt that day. I love Greenbelt and I can recall all those times my family and I would be there every week (until traffic became to unbearable for us that we learned how to value proximity). But yeaaah, if only I can bring Greenbelt 50KM closer to us, I would be okay with that haha

One of Greenbelt's MallsA

Anyway, going back to my ramen story… I’ve read a lot about good ramen places here in Manila, but most of them are not in Greenbelt. And such a shame cause we were such in a hurry to find out about a ramen place in Greenbelt that I just googled “ramen house greenbelt” and Kenji Tei came up!

It wasn’t disappointing, it’s just that I feel bad that the only ramen that he had here in Manila is not as good as the ones that we had in the US! 🙁

Mongkok x Morelli’s

09.25.2013: Win-Win

Hello, sweethearts! 🙂 I hope you are all enjoying my “LOVE in MNL” posts! It’s been a while since I last did this, but I would like to say… THANK YOU to everyone who followed my blog these past couple of days, and those who regularly views my page 🙂 Never did I imagine that I will get more than 200 WordPress followers, and readers outside WordPress, and from all over the world for that matter! 🙂

Anyway, remember how I said I tried my best to stay away from Asian food when he got here? Well that didn’t happen lol. A loves Asian food so much, and for his first 24 hours here, all he kept on talking about is how he can’t wait to eat delicious Chinese food. I tried so hard to convince him to just wait until we get to Hong Kong BUT his beautiful eyes just kept on asking for it. So wish granted! 🙂 Besides, the least thing that I can do (or maybe the best) for someone who flew 8554 miles for me is to satisfy his Asian cravings.

Tocilog for his breakfast. Very pinoy! 🙂

I will try to include his breakfasts in my posts. Cause I am happy that he was able to try different kinds of foods every morning (thanks to my Dad) and caaaause I love breakfast! Haha
